1st course - Intuitive Color Painting

Now that you've discovered your unique color palette, I invite you to gather supplies

In this first exercise, we will explore color, sound and movement.

You will need...

Watercolor Paints

you'll want the bowl to be sturdy with an opening wide enough to easily dip your gloved fingers into

headphones

for best audio experience & quality

these will be useful if you are in a space where there's no privacy

Friends Covering Eyes

optional

you may also choose to keep your eyes closed during the exercise. The idea is to keep the inner critic from analyzing your movements.

blind painting with your first color

Put a tiny dab of paint from your first color tube in the bowl and add a few tablespoons of water and mix. With your watercolor paper directly in front of you and the bowl in dipping distance, play the first audio below while blindfolded or with eyes closed to create your first color layer. My voice will guide you as you go.

When the music stops, cease your mark making and let this layer dry before beginning the next step. Notice in your body how it felt to move and paint to this ominous sound track. Rinse your bowl to prepare for the next color.

second layer with your next color

Now that the first layer is dry, repeat the process with your next color. This sound track is a more calming tone...be an observer and have an awareness of how your body and mind respond to these tones. Again, stop when prompted and let this layer dry before continuing.

last layer & your third color

With your first two layers dry, play this last audio as you paint with your last color over the top. Notice how the tones of this cheerful audio land in your body and onto the page.

Your finished intuitive color painting

will look a bit like this...it will have the quality of a work of art from a child...

the child that still lives somewhere inside you...

Try placing a mat over part of your painting...blur your focus...see if you can identify images. Turn it in various ways until something jumps out at you. For example, in my painting I see on the right the beginnings of a blackbird and on the left a shape that could be turned into a swan. Do you see what I see?

you may feel like you want to add to the images, making them more realistic or leave them abstract.

Color Collage

IMG_5053_edited.jpg

In this exercise, we'll explore how your three colors will live together in collage form.

I invite you to get curious and see what happens when you collect images and arrange them...

a story may unfold.

This process gives the right brain the space to play,

this is the realm of mystery in art making.

We get out of the way and make room for magic.

Let's Begin!

You'll need . . .

glue stick

fine point scissors

11x15 or larger mixed media paper

magazines and junk mail

Once you've gathered your supplies, quickly go through your magazines and pull out images of your 3 colors. You may find text also, but only choose text that resonates or "pulls" you to include it.

After you've found at least 10 pieces, cut them out and play around, situating them on the paper. Keep moving them until you find an arrangement that "speaks to you", tells a story, makes you happy or just feels like TRUTH.

When you're done, you may choose to frame the image or include it in a journal. If there's a story that wants to be told, you may feel moved to incorporate this in some way. Be playful...this is just one more way to practice creating with your unique color palette. How does it feel to work with these specific colors?

Give your collage a title.
